The KFC Yum! Center is a multipurpose arena with a maximum capacity to seat 22,000. The arena includes a full-size practice basketball court, 71 suites, and 62 premium boxes along with numerous bars and lounges. Despite many unique site challenges, the project opened one month ahead of schedule.
The project was located on the site of a 100-year old power plant that provided power for downtown Louisville. Before construction could begin, the power needed to be redirected to a new facility located adjacent to the site and the existing power plant demolished. The site was also connected to the Ohio River by a series of tunnels requiring significant surveying and closure. The design of the building needed to accommodate the voids. In addition, the arena was located next to the main arterial highway leading into and out of downtown.
